Softball Falls To No. 14 Oregon, 8-1, At UNLV Classic
March 12, 2004
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Oregon used four home runs, including two in a three-run fourth inning, as the Ducks went on to beat JU, 8-1, Friday afternoon at Jim Rogers Field at the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas. It is the second loss in less than 10 days for the Dolphins against the 14th-ranked Ducks (18-6), who were upset by Southern Utah, 4-3, in the first game of the day. JU (8-19) will play Long Island at 11 p.m. EST in the second of five games over the next three days.
The Dolphins, who have played 25 of their first 27 games away from home, managed just one infield hit against Oregon's Ani Nyhus (8-3), who tossed 5.0 shutout innings. JU's lone run came against reliever Lindsey Kontra in the sixth. Junior righthander Stacey Bell (Jacksonville, Fla./Terry Parker) suffered the loss for JU, allowing three runs on three hits - all in the fourth inning - before being replaced by Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) who allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits, but walked six in 3.2 innings of work.
Oregon's Ashley Richards hit the first of her two home runs to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Beth Boskovich followed with a one-out triple and then Kayleen Hudson drilled a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0. Oregon added three more runs in the sixth thanks to Richard's third home run of the day and a costly Dolphin error, which followed back-to-back walks by Buell.
JU got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on Sonja Cadarette's (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) RBI single, which scored Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.), who walked to lead off the inning. Korcak moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kacey Yourous (Radcliffe, Ky.) and then stole third base. Oregon added a pair of runs in the seventh when Richards blasted her second home run of the day.
The Dolphins will play host UNLV on Saturday at 3 p.m. EST and Southern Utah at 11 p.m. EST.
