Softball Splits Doubleheader With South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Freshman righthander Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) allowed just one unearned run and scattered five hits, while striking out six as JU scored five runs in the fifth inning to down South Carolina State, 7-1, in a five-inning game shortened due to darkness Wednesday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field. The Lady Bulldogs won game one, 7-6, in 11 innings after scoring two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning following a pair of Dolphin errors. Sophomore Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out 12. JU (14-31), which is in the middle of a 12-game road trip, had 10 hits in the opener and left nine runners on base.

The Dolphins erased a 3-0 deficit in game one to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, but South Carolina State (9-18) tied the game in both the ninth and 10th innings before scoring two runs in the bottom of the 11th. Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.), Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood), Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.), Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.) and Kim Burns (Jacksonville/ACDS) each had run-scoring hits for JU in the nightcap, while sophomore catcher Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.) had a two-run double as the Dolphins exploded for seven runs on seven hits.

JU returns to action on Saturday at Campbell at 1 p.m. in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader.
