Softball Receives NFCA Academic Recognition

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball program received recognition from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for its academic success, it was announced today. The Dolphins posted a 3.33 team GPA, ranking 14th among Division I programs. Eight Dolphins were also recognized as scholar-athletes by the NFCA for holding a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

During the 2003-04 academic year, head coach Jeff Franquet's squad placed 12 athletes on the Atlantic Sun All-Academic team. Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) became the first Dolphin softball player to be named an Academic All-American, making the second team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Jamie Ross (Shoreline, Wash.) also earned a spot on the President's Honor Roll, while Stacey Bell (Jacksonville/Terry Parker), Kim Burns (Orange Park, Fla.), Stephanie Byrd (Eire, Colo.), Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood), Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and Kasey Yourous (Radcliff, Ky.) made the Dean's List.

The Dolphins topped all Atlantic Sun teams on the list, with Belmont (30th), Gardner-Webb (45th) and Campbell (79th) also receiving recognition. Eastern Michigan University led the D-I rankings with a 3.55 team GPA.

The Dolphins host the JU Fall Classic Sunday, Oct. 24, at the JU Softball Complex.
