Softball Picked Eighth in Atlantic Sun Preseason Polls

Jan. 25, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team was picked eighth in both the Atlantic Sun Conference Coaches and Media Preseason polls, the conference office released today.

Eight-time and defending tournament champions Florida Atlantic was picked to win the league in both polls. UCF was tabbed to finish second followed by Stetson, Troy and Mercer, respectively.

The Dolphins return eight starters from the 2004 squad which went 22-42, including junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.), who went 11-17 in the circle last year. JU also returns senior first baseman/catcher Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and junior utility player Kacey Yourous (Hardin, Ky.). Redfern ranked second on the team in 2004 with two home runs, while Yourous posted the top batting average among returnees (.263) a year ago.

The Dolphins begin their third season under head coach Jeff Franquet on Thursday, Feb. 3 against No. 9 Washington at the Hawaii Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
