Softball Falls To No. 9 Washington, 12-0, in Season Opener

HONOLULU - The Jacksonville University softball team dropped its season opener to No. 9 Washington, 12-0, in five innings Thursday afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu.

The Dolphins had only five hits in the game, while Washington only needed seven to score their 12 runs. The Huskies were led by designated player Callie Bergan, who drove in five runs including a grand slam to put the Huskies up 6-0 after one inning.

Washington scored again in the third, with two runs being plated after a Stephanie Beasley (Tallahassee, Fla.) error. The Huskies ended their scoring in the fourth when Bergan drew a bases-loaded walk and Ashley Charters had a two-run double to push the score to 12-0.

Sophomore Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) suffered the loss for JU after giving up seven earned runs and four walks with only three strikeouts in three innings.

The Dolphins take on No. 14 Oregon Friday at 8 p.m. et in their second game of the Hawaii Paradise Classic.
