Softball Loses, 9-6, to IPFW
Feb. 6, 2005
HONOLULU - IPFW scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 9-6 win over the Jacksonville University softball team Sunday morning in the Hawaii Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Stadium. The Dolphins fall to 1-3 on the season, while IPFW improves to 1-4.
The Mastodons took advantage of back-to-back walks issued by sophomore Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the bottom of the sixth. Buell, who got leadoff hitter Tierni Green to ground out to open the inning, looked to get out of the jam after getting cleanup hitter Jenna Beachy to fly out to shallow center. However, Kacie Stone got a single to drive in both runners to put IPFW back on top 8-6. Heather DeVore finished off the inning with a single to left that scored Stone.
JU tied up the game in the top half of the sixth with help from the Mastodons. All three errors by IPFW came in the sixth, which helped the Dolphins plate three runs in the frame. Sophomore Stephanie Beasley (Tallahassee, Fla.) opened the inning with a leadoff walk, with senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) following her with a single to center that put both runners in scoring position after an error by Green. Ty Lambert misplayed Katie Pestrak's (Gainesville, Fla.) ball in left to push both runners across for JU, while Pestrak advanced to third base. Pestrak then scored on an error by third baseman Ashley Johnson to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the fifth, IPFW retook the lead with four runs in the inning, with two of those coming on a Beachy single.
The Dolphins took their first lead in the ballgame in the top of the fourth with three runs in the inning. Redfern drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the first JU run, while senior Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) singled to left to push across another run, tying the game at 2-2. Freshman Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) drove in the go-ahead run as she grounded out to first base.
IPFW took the initial lead in the bottom of the first when Green scored from third on a Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) wild pitch. Natalie Clark scored on the next play on Beachy's RBI groundout to short.
Buell took the loss for JU, falling to 1-1 on the season. Jenna Connelly got the win in relief for the Mastodons.
The Dolphins host Savannah State Wed., Feb. 3 in a doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
