Game One Box Score - Game Two Box Score

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior catcher Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.) hit her first career homer while JU forced extra innings in game two, but the Dolphins could not hold on as they lost to Florida A&M, 4-3, in the second game of the doubleheader at Lady Rattler Complex Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins also lost game one, 6-1, to the Lady Rattlers.

In game two, the Dolphins (1-6) tied up the game in the top of the seventh on junior Katie Pestrak's (Gainesville, Fla.) single up the middle, which plated freshman Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) after her lead-off double. Senior Jamie Ross (Shoreline, Wash.) moved Pestrak to third with a single, but FAMU's Ashley Mitchell shut down the rally.

JU held its ground in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, as junior Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) struck out Mitchell and got Kenycia Byrd to fly to center with runners on second and third to force extra innings.

JU took the lead after junior Lindsey Freitag (Lake Stevens, Wash.) singled home senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood), who led off the eighth with a double. The Dolphins tried to add an insurance run with two outs, but Mitchell again got a pop up to get out of the inning.

The lead would not hold, as Danielle Brown followed Lisa Dronkers' lead-off single with her second home run of the day to give Florida A&M the 4-3 victory. Mitchell got the win to move to 2-1 on the season, while Dobson dropped to 0-2.

JU took the lead in the top of the first, when Palumbo drove a Destiny Gordon offering into left center for her first career home run. The Lady Rattlers answered in the bottom of the frame on three consecutive singles by Dronkers, Byrd and Brown to tie up the score at 1-1. They took the lead in the third on a double by Byrd after consecutive walks by sophomore Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) put Ashley Walker in scoring position.

In the first game, the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the first on sophomore Stephanie Beasley's (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) sacrifice fly. However, Florida A&M would plate three in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-1 win. Dronkers led the Lady Rattler attack, going 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI in the opener.

JU holds its home opener against South Carolina State on Wednesday, Feb. 16 in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex.
