Freitag's Two-Run Homer Leads Softball to 5-3 win over Florida A&M
Feb. 21, 2005
TAMPA, Fla. - Junior third baseman Lindsey Freitag's (Lake Stevens, Wash.) two-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh propelled the Dolphins over Florida A&M, 5-3, early Monday morning in the USF Wilson Tournament. Frietag's bomb down the left field line was her first of the season and evened up JU's record to 2-2 in the first of four tourneys hosted by USF.
The Dolphins bounced back after having the game tied up in the bottom of the sixth by the Lady Rattlers. Ruby Nugent led off the frame with a double. After Nugent was sacrificed over to third, Kenycia Byrd hit a ball straight down in front of the plate, and Nugent charged home, freezing the JU defense. Nugent scored to tie up the game at 3-3.
JU took their first lead with a two-out rally in the third. Senior first baseman Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and Freitag drew back-to-back walks from FAMU's Danielle Brown. A wild pitch moved both into scoring position, where senior leftfielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) doubled to bring both around. The Dolphins added another run in the fourth.
Florida A&M took the early lead in the first, scoring on a double steal started after Byrd walked with Nugent on third.
"We had great energy tonight after waiting so long to play this second game," said JU head coach Jeff Franquet. "It was a great team effort today to get a win over a preseason top-25 team and showed great focus to come back and maintain our effort and energy tonight. That's a big credit to our team."
Junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) went seven innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out six to move her record to 2-3. Brown threw seven innings for the Lady Rattlers, giving up four earned runs while striking out three to fall to 4-4.
JU closes out the tournament against Seton Hall at 12 noon Monday at the USF Softball Field.
