Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. - The JU softball team forced extra innings with two runs in the top of the seventh but could not finish the deal as the Dolphins fell, 6-5, in eight innings to Pittsburgh on the first day of the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament. JU was led by junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day), who went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Pittsburgh moves to 4-7 on the season, while the Dolphins drop to 8-10.

In the bottom of the eighth with Panther Sheena Hellon on third base, Jessica Dignon drove a ball into center. Junior Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) made the catch and tried to throw out the tagging Hellon, but the throw was up the third-base line and got away from junior catcher Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.), allowing Hellon to score the winning run for Pitt.

The Dolphins tied up the game in the top of the seventh when Farabee drove in junior Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary's, Fla.) and freshman Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) with a double. Palumbo moved Farabee to third with a sacrifice bunt, but Farabee was gunned down at the plate by Panther shortstop Sheena Hellon after Lindsey Freitag's (Lake Stevens, Fla.) grounder.

Pittsburgh took their first lead of the ball game in the third, when Christa Hunter hit a two-out, two-run bomb down the left field line, putting the Panthers on top, 4-3.

JU opened the game with a two-run first, as Farabee and senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) scored on Casey Pickard's error at first base with two outs in the first. Pitt answered in the bottom half of the inning when Hellon doubled in two runs to tie the game at 2-2.

The Dolphins continue play in the USF Louisville Slugger later tonight against 15th-ranked Florida, with first pitch tentatively set for 8 p.m.
