March 5, 2005

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. - Junior Kacey Yourous (Hardin, Ky.) hit her second home run of the season, while junior Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI, but three errors in the fourth cost JU as they lost to Temple, 3-2, on the second day of the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament. The loss drops the Dolphins to 8-12 on the season, while Temple improves to 5-9.

The Owls took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, taking advantage of three JU errors in the frame. Aida Esquer scored when senior catcher Lauren Redfern's (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) pickoff attempt was wild, tying up the game at 1-1. Rolanda Marable moved to third on the failed pickoff attempt and scored when rightfielder Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) missed a fly in right. Later in the inning, Mirante again dropped a fly ball, allowing Melissa McCartney to score, but the freshman did throw out Brandie Mora at second to end the inning with the Owls ahead, 3-1.

JU tried to fight back in the fifth, getting two runners on with one out, but a double play ended the inning with no runs scored. The Dolphins again tried to tie it in the seventh, with junior Lindsey Freitag (Lake Stevens, Wash.) getting a single to lead off the inning. JU moved the runner to third, where Pestrak drove her in with a bunt single. But senior leftfielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) grounded out to end the threat and the game.

The Dolphins took the initial lead in the fourth when Yourous led off with a solo shot to left field, her second career home run.

Junior Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) threw 6.0 innings, striking out five while allowing four hits and three runs (one earned) to fall to 3-5. Richelle Villescas pitched 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to improve to 5-7.

JU ends its second trip to Tampa with games against Chattanooga at 1 p.m. and the host USF at 5 p.m. at the USF Softball Field.
