Softball Falls to No. 15 Florida, 14-1
March 5, 2005
TAMPA, Fla. - Junior third baseman Lindsey Freitag (Lake Stevens, Wash.) hit an RBI double in the first inning, but it wasn't enough as the No. 15 Florida Gators defeated the Dolphins, 14-1, at the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa on Friday night. JU (8-11) managed just four hits, while Florida (14-5) pounded 14 hits off the JU pitching staff.
Junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville, Fla./Arlington Country Day) led off the game with a single and junior catcher Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.) followed with a walk. Freitag then laced a two-out double to right center field, plating Farabee and giving the Dolphins the early 1-0 lead.
Florida answered in the bottom of the first with a five-run inning off Dolphin starter Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.). The Gators extended the lead in the second with a solo home run by Lindsay Cameron. Florida added eight runs in the third off junior right-hander Randa Blenden (Waco, Texas) to get the victory.
Jensen (2-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (one earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings pitched, while Blenden allowed eight runs (three earned) on five hits in an inning of relief. Sophomore Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the fourth.
Gator sophomore Shelley Stevens picked up the win, allowing no runs in 4.0 innings with seven strikeouts.
The Dolphins play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against Temple in the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament.
