Softball Puts Out Illinois-Chicago Flames, 1-0, in Speedline Invitational
March 10, 2005
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Senior leftfielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) hit a two-out single to drive in the only run as the JU softball team downed defending Horizon League champion Illinois-Chicago, 1-0, on the first day of the Speedline Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The Dolphins move to 10-15 on the campaign, while Illinois-Chicago falls to 7-12.
JU scored its lone run in the fifth when junior Kacey Yourous (Hardin, Ky.) singled with one out and stole second. Diaz knocked the 1-2 pitch through the left side to plate Yourous and give the Dolphins the 1-0 advantage.
The Flames threatened in the top of the first, getting runners at second and third with two down. But junior Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) struck out Nicole Robinson on three pitches to end the inning.
Dobson hurled 7.0 innings, striking out seven while giving up only three hits for her ninth career shutout.
"Katie was lights out tonight," said JU head coach Jeff Franquet. "It was a great win for her, beating a team that beat her last year and winning in her hometown.
"We've been talking with our team about stepping it up on offense and getting the big hit. Mayte was huge to get that hit tonight."
JU takes on Massachusetts at 4 p.m. Friday before ending the day with a 6 p.m. showdown against Buffalo on the second day of the Speedline Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
