Softball Splits on Second Day of Speedline Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) hit a two-run homer in game one to lead the JU softball team to a 7-2 win over Massachusetts Friday afternoon on day two of the Speedline Invitational. In the nightcap, the Dolphins gave up an unearned run in the fifth to fall to Buffalo, 3-2, at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.

Redfern, who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run on the day, drove the 1-0 offering from Jenna Busa over the left field fence to score herself and freshman Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) to put the Dolphins on top for good. JU added another in the second when freshman Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) singled to right to plate junior Kacey Yourous (Hardin, Ky.). The Dolphins went up 4-2 in the third, as Redfern doubled in senior Jamie Ross (Shoreline, Wash.).

The Minutewomen scored their runs off KJ Kelley home runs, a two-run shot in the first and a solo blast in the six.

JU put three more runs on the board in the sixth on a senior Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) RBI single and a two RBI double from junior Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day).

Jensen went 7.0 innings, giving up three hits and two runs for her third win of the season.

In game two, Buffalo got the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth when Mary Russell hit a liner into center that junior Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) caught on the dive, but Laura Kor scored to put the Bulls up 3-2.

The Dolphins tied up the contest in the third, as Jensen doubled in Ross and Farabee. Buffalo took the early lead in the first, scoring on an RBI single by Julie Hibner and a squeeze bunt by Lisa Wheat.

Dobson went 7.0 innings, striking out eight while giving up four hits and three runs (two earned) to fall to 5-6.

The Dolphins face BYU at 12 noon before advancing into bracket play later Saturday afternoon.
