Softball Opens Bracket Play with 3-0 Win over Western Michigan in Speedline Invitational
March 12, 2005
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) scattered five hits over 7.0 innings for her second shutout of the weekend as the JU softball team downed Western Michigan, 3-0, in the start of bracket play at the Speedline Invitational. Freshman Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) added a triple and had two assists from right field to help the Dolphins improve to 12-17 on the season. JU fell to BYU, 4-0, in their earlier game to wrap up pool play at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
Against Western Michigan, the Dolphins took the lead early as senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) had an RBI single to put JU up 1-0. Senior left fielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) scored the Dolphins' second run, crossing the plate on a wild pitch by Broncos pitcher Tricia Van Der Slik.
JU got their final run in the fifth as junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) drove in Mirante, who led off the inning with a triple.
Mirante ended two innings with assists from right, closing the first by gunning down Katie Niemi at third base for the first out. With two runners on and two outs in the fifth, Mirante mowed down her second runner, tossing out Kyla Sullivan on what seemed to be a single through the right side.
"Mirante played like a veteran today," said JU head coach Jeff Franquet. "She had a great defensive game for us. Those two throws were huge, killing Western Michigan's rallies."
In the earlier game against BYU, the Dolphins stayed in the game until the bottom of the fifth, when BYU took advantage of two hit by pitches to plate three runs in the frame, helped by Paige Paramore's two-RBI single. The Cougars (14-2) added another run in the sixth on Ariel Capra's RBI single. The Cougars had a chance to add more, but JU got out of the jam when Lauren Watson-Perry lined out to junior right fielder Kacey Yourous (Hardin, Ky.) and doubled off Capra, who was running on the play.
"It was great to beat Western Michigan today after playing BYU tough early," commented Franquet.
JU takes on the winner of the Chattanooga/Northern Illinois match-up at 1 p.m. in the Bracket C championship game.
