Softball Loses Heartbreaker to Chattanooga, 5-2, in Speedline Invitational
March 13, 2005
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Chattanooga's Tara Tembey hit a three-run, walk-off home run to down the JU softball team, 5-2, in the championship game of Bracket C at the Speedline Invitational Sunday afternoon at Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The loss drops JU to 12-18 on the season, while the Mocs move to 18-11. Tembey drove the 3-2 offering over the right field fence to give Chattanooga their second victory over the Dolphins this season.
JU, who left eight runners on base, got on the board in the fifth as freshman right fielder Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) scored on senior catcher Lauren Redfern's (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) single, while junior Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.) crossed the plate on junior shortstop Lindsey Freitag's (Lake Stevens, Fla.) two-out hit.
The Mocs tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth on Tara Tembey's single that plated Amanda Hoiness, who got a one-out double.
Chattanooga took the initial lead in the second when Brittany Whittier scampered home after Redfern's throw got away from junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) on Ashley Clarkson's stolen base. Farabee was injured on the slide at second.
The Dolphins squandered opportunities early, including in the top of the first, where they loaded the bases with one out thanks to two dropped fly balls by the Mocs' outfield. But UTC's Lacey Swarthout struck out the next two JU hitters to get out of the jam. JU had another chance in the third, getting a lead-off double from Palumbo, but she was doubled off when Redfern lined out to left.
Junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) pitched 5.1 innings in relief, giving up four hits and four runs while striking out seven. Ashley Frizzell picked up the win, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Palumbo led the Dolphins at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double in the game.
The Dolphins host Kentucky State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday, March 16 at the JU Softball Complex.
