Softball sweeps doubleheader with Edward Waters, 14-0 & 20-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - Freshman Shannon Jensen (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian) threw a perfect game in game one, while also going 4-for-6 on the day with five RBI and a grand slam to help the JU softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Edward Waters College (14-0, 20-0), Saturday afternoon at J. Gardner Sam Park. The Dolphins (14-18) pounded 37 runs on 35 hits, while junior right-hander Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) hurled a no-hitter in game two with six strikeouts to help JU's efforts.
The Dolphins were lead in hitting by senior catcher Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) who went five-for-eight on the day with four RBI. Redfern hit her team-leading 13th double of season, while also adding a homer, triple, and a couple of singles to hit for the cycle in the two games. Junior Kacey Yourous (Radcliff, Ky.) drove in five RBI and hit her third homerun of the season in game one. Senior right fielder Jamie Ross (Shoreline, Wash.) hit her first career triple and drove in four runners in game two.
In game one, JU lead 4-0 when they were able to send 12 batters in the third inning to score seven runs on five hits. The inning was capped off by Jensen's first career grand slam to left field off Edward Waters starter Tina Williams. Yourous smashed a three-run homer in the fifth to deep center ensuring the victory the Dolphins.
Jensen earned her the win and her first perfect game by retiring all 15 batters she faced while striking out six in 5.0 innings.
In game two, the Dolphins scored 14 runs in the first three innings and looked for the back as they scored a season-high 20 runs. Ross set the tone by driving in three with a triple in the first inning. Redfern had four hits while junior catcher Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.), and Jensen each had three hits to add to the Dolphin's 23 hits.
Dobson earned the win in game two by tossing her first no-hitter of the season in 5.0 innings pitched. This was her fourth career no-hitter as a Dolphin.
The Dolphins start Atlantic Sun play against Campbell in a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 at the JU Softball Complex.
