April 2, 2005

Box Score

TROY, Ala. - Senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season in the second game, but it was too late as the Dolphins were swept by Troy in their first Atlantic Sun road doubleheader of 2005, 1-0 and 9-1, Saturday afternoon at the Lady Trojan Softball Complex. Junior Kacey Yourous (Hardin, Ky.) had two hits on the afternoon, but JU could only muster one run in the two games.

In game one, Troy (26-15, 2-0 A-Sun) got a walk-off home run from shortstop Caurie Miller, who drove the 3-1 offering from junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) into the 20 mile-per-hour wind over the 220-foot sign in center field.

The Dolphins (18-21, 3-2 A-Sun) advanced two runners in scoring position but could get no runs across the plate. Junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) led off the game with a single and moved to second on junior catcher Janine Palumbo's (Clearwater, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. But Lady Trojan starter Jocelyn McCallum struck out the Dolphins' next two hitters to get out of that jam. Then in the fifth, Yourous doubled to left with one out, but again JU's batters could not figure out McCallum, as she struck out the next hitter before getting a ground ball to get out of the inning.

Dobson (9-9), who pitched out of two bases loaded jams, gave up nine hits while striking out two in the loss. McCallum (10-5) went 7.0 innings, fanning 11 batters while giving up only two hits for the win.

The Lady Trojans' bats came to life in game two, knocking 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman pitcher Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) picked up the loss, giving up seven hits and six earned runs in 2.0 innings of work. Troy's Kacey Flynn (10-7) got the win, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out six.

JU faces South Carolina State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday, April 5 at Lady Bulldog Field in Orangeburg, S.C.
