April 11, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary's, Fla.) went 3-for-3 with a triple and eight RBI, a new single-game record, in game one while senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) tallied two doubles to lead the JU softball team to a sweep against cross-town foe Edward Waters, 20-0 and 10-0, at the JU Softball Complex Monday evening.
The Dolphins had 19 hits in game one and saw every batter recording an at-bat get a hit. Junior Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) went 4-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI from the leadoff spot, while junior Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) had a 1-for-3 outing with a triple and 3 RBI for JU.
JU scored six in the first, four in the second and five in both the third and fourth. Houston, who doubled her RBI output during the season in game one, drove in her first two in the first on a single up the middle, bringing home freshman Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and junior Lindsey Freitag (Lake Stevens, Wash.). Houston struck again in the second with a bases-loaded triple. Farabee brought her in with a single to left to end the scoring in the second.
In the third, Pestrak had the big hit, hitting a bases-loaded triple to make the score 14-0. Houston followed that with a sacrifice fly for her sixth RBI, breaking the record held by former Dolphins Ronda Campo, Sonja Cadarette and Dianna Korcak. Houston drove in her final two runs with a single to right center in the fourth.
Sophomore Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) threw 5.0 innings, giving up two hits and striking out six for her second shutout of the year.
Redfern and senior Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) both had two RBI in the second game. The Dolphins posted six runs in the first, two on Redfern's double and four straight on walks by Tigers pitcher Jeanette Hilton. JU added three in the second and another in the fourth to get the 10-0 win.
Junior Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) struck out nine in 5.0 innings for her sixth shutout of the year.
The Dolphins travel to Nashville for Atlantic Sun Conference match-ups against Belmont and Lipscomb, beginning Friday afternoon against Belmont at 1 p.m. CDT.
