Game Two Box Score

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Junior Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.) and senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) both hit a home run in game two, but the JU softball team again failed to close out as they were swept by Lipscomb in a crucial Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader at Crockett Park Sunday afternoon. The Lady Bisons (20-17, 7-3 A-Sun) won game one, 3-2, before taking the second game, 5-3.

Palumbo went 4-for-6 with a double and her second career home run for the Dolphins (27-26, 6-7 A-Sun), while Redfern, junior Lindsay Freitag (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and junior Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) all had two hits in the twinbill.

In game one, all the runs were scored in the first. JU jumped out on top, 2-0, as junior Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) crossed the plate after Lipscomb's Alysha Forsythe tried to throw out Redfern as she broke towards second, but no one was covering. Pestrak followed with a double to bring home Redfern.

The Lady Bisons answered in the bottom of the first when designated player Jennifer Cannon crushed the 0-2 offering from junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) over the left field wall for a three-run homer to give Lipscomb the 3-2 advantage.

JU had a couple of chances when Palumbo had a one-out double in the third and a lead-off single in the sixth. But the Dolphin offense saw two straight strikeouts in the third to end the frame and three popped-up bunts in the sixth to kill the rallies.

Dobson (13-13) went 6.0 innings, giving up two hits and three runs while striking out seven. Lipscomb's Danielle Catalano (8-7) picked up the win, tossing 7.0 innings, striking out eight while allowing four hits and two unearned runs.

Lipscomb struck the final blow in the sixth of game two, getting three runs to take the 5-3 win. Heather Collins walked and Niki Bails, who pinch ran for Collins, moved to third on Freitag's throwing error on Cannon's sacrifice bunt attempt. The Dolphins brought in Dobson, who threw a wild pitch that allowed Bails to score. Shay Sullivan hit a single through the right side to plate Cannon, giving Lipscomb the 4-3 lead. After a walk by Dobson and a single by Leigh Little, sophomore Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) plunked Julia Davidson to force home Sullivan to give the Lady Bisons the 5-3 win.

The Dolphins opened up the scoring in the third when Palumbo took a 3-2 pitch from Sara Meek out to left for her second homer of the season. Lipscomb went ahead in the fourth when Jessica Wilson scored on freshman Shannon Jensen's (Callahan, Fla.) wild pitch and Cannon doubled home Collins.

JU went back on top in the sixth when Redfern drilled the Meek offering out down the left field line, scoring Palumbo, who led off the inning with a single. The bomb was the eighth of the season from Redfern, surpassing Sonja Cadarette to take first place all-time in single-season homers.

Jensen (9-9) went 5.0 innings, allowing 4 runs (two earned) on three hits while fanning six. Meek (6-4) tossed 6.0 innings, giving up seven hits and three runs for the win. Allison Tyree threw the seventh, walking one, to pick up her first save of the season.
