Shannon Jensen Completes One-Hitter as Dolphins Down Gardner-Webb, 3-0
April 24, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) tossed a one-hitter as the JU softball team defeated Gardner-Webb, 3-0, in Atlantic Sun Conference action Sunday afternoon at the JU Softball Complex. The game, originally suspended on March 26, moved the Dolphins to 30-28 on the year, 9-9 in conference action, while the Bulldogs fell to 18-30-1, 2-14 in the A-Sun. It is the Dolphins' first 30-win season in program's three-year existence.
"Getting our first 30-win season is awesome," JU head coach Jeff Franquet said. "I'm proud of our kids getting us there in the third year we've been here. We also wouldn't have gotten it done without our great staff. Brooke (Franquet) has done a phenomenal job with our pitching staff this season. And Jim (Beitia) has been the missing piece to the puzzle, helping us out tremendously on offense and defense."
Senior catcher Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) had two hits and an RBI in the game, while junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) and junior first baseman Kacey Yourous (Radcliff, Ky.) both had an RBI.
JU took the lead in the third, as Redfern brought home Farabee with a single up the middle. Yourous followed that with a double to center to plate Redfern. JU added their final run in the fourth when junior centerfielder Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) scored on Farabee's sacrifice fly.
Jensen (12-9) allowed only one hit in 7.0 innings, striking out eight without walking a batter for her fifth shutout in A-Sun play and sixth overall this season. The Bulldogs' Stacie Reichert (11-16) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.
"Shannon (Jensen) really stepped it up and got it done today, as she has all week and all year for us," commented Franquet.
The Dolphins take on Savannah State Thursday, April 28 at 1 p.m. at the Paulson Softball Complex.
