Shannon Jensen Named Atlantic Sun Softball Pitcher Of The Week

April 25, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) earned JU's first Atlantic Sun Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week honor of the year with shutouts against conference foes Stetson and UCF to lead the Dolphins to their first A-Sun Championship berth. The 2005 A-Sun postseason tournament will be held in Boca Raton, Fla., on May 12-14.

Jensen started the week by scattering eight hits with five strikeouts against Stetson, leading the Dolphins to a 1-0 win on Wednesday. She followed that performance with a four-hitter against UCF on April 23, fanning eight and allowing only four hits. The freshman closed out the week with a one-hitter against Gardner-Webb in the completion of a game originally started on March 26. The contest was halted with no score in the second inning due to inclement weather.

The three wins by Jensen, combined with two losses by Georgia State, guaranteed JU a berth into the 2005 Atlantic Sun Championship, hosted by Florida Atlantic. It will be the Dolphins' first trip to the conference tournament in the three-year history of the program.

Jensen stands at 12-9 on the season and leads JU with a 1.66 earned run average and six shutouts, including five shutouts in conference play. She also tossed a perfect game earlier in the year against Edward Waters on March 20. Jensen is the third Dolphin to win the weekly honor, with Stacey Bell taking home the award once in 2004 and Bridget Starry winning the accolade in 2003.

JU travels to Savannah State on Thursday, April 28 at 1 p.m. at the Paulson Softball Complex.
