May. 2, 2005
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Freshman Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) scored a run in both games, but the Dolphins still fell to defending Atlantic Sun champions Florida Atlantic, 3-2 and 5-2, in the A-Sun finale for both teams Sunday evening at FAU Field. The Owls move to 35-30, 14-6 in conference action, while JU falls to 34-30 and 9-11. Junior shortstop Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) went 3-for-5 on the day, while Mirante was 2-for-3 in the second game.
The Dolphins are locked into the sixth spot in the Atlantic Sun Championship, held back at FAU Field starting on Thursday, May 12.
Florida Atlantic took the win in game one in the seventh as the Owls' Jenna Lopez led off the frame with a double. Charlotte Baird attempted to sacrifice her to third, but the throw got away from junior second baseman Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary's, Fla.), allowing Lopez to score on the play.
The Dolphins tied up the contest in the fourth when Farabee's two-out line drive hit off of FAU right fielder Lauren Crandall's glove, allowing senior Jamie Ross (Shoreline, Wash.) and Mirante to score. Crandall gunned down Houston at the plate when she tried to score from first on the play.
The Owls opened up the scoring in the first as the leadoff hitter Sachs lined a ball over the left field wall for her fourth homer of the season. They added an insurance run in the third as Sachs singled home Baird, who roped a two-out double to get into scoring position.
JU had a chance in the fourth to score as Farabee led off the frame with a double. Junior Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.) moved her to third with a sacrifice, but Meghan Doonan buckled down, getting a groundout and a pop fly to short to get out of the jam.
Doonan (14-12) allowed two runs on two hits while striking out six over 7.0 innings to pick up the win. Junior Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) gave up seven hits in 6.0 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, in the loss.
In game two, Florida Atlantic retook the lead in the third on Danielle Arriaga's RBI single up the middle, plating Melissa Moore from second. They added two insurance runs in the fifth on another Arriaga RBI single and Jenn Piazza's sacrifice fly.
The Dolphins tied up the game in the third on an RBI groundout by Palumbo and an RBI single by senior Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood), the latter a liner hitting off FAU third baseman Jessica Sachs' glove before falling into foul territory for the hit.
The Owls took the early lead in the second inning of game two when Lauren Crandall hit a two-run homer over the left field wall.
FAU's Ashley Greene (12-8) tossed 7.0 innings, striking out four while allowing two runs, none earned, to pick up the win. Freshman Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) gave up five runs on five hits and six walks in 5.0 innings.
