Softball Falls to Troy, 7-2, in the Opening Round of the Atlantic Sun Championship

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Junior centerfielder Katie Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.) hit her third home run of the season, but Troy's Bonnie Belin went 3-for-3 with four RBI as the Trojans downed the JU softball team, 7-2, in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Championship at FAU Field Thursday morning. Junior right fielder Kacey Yourous (Radcliff, Ky.) went 2-for-3 on the day.

The Trojans jumped on the board early, as Belin singled home Jenny Boyd, giving Troy the 1-0 lead. They then loaded the bases with one out, but junior pitcher Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) got a strikeout and a ground ball to get out of the jam.

Troy put three more on the board in the second when First-Team A-Sun All-Conference catcher Tamra Howren knocked a 3-2, two-out pitch out to straightaway center field, giving the Trojans the 4-0 advantage. They added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Belin.

The Dolphins got their only runs in the sixth on Pestrak's homer to left. Troy answered in the bottom half of the inning on Belin's two-RBI single, giving Troy the 7-2 win.

The Trojans' Jocelyn McCallum (19-8), the A-Sun Pitcher of the Year, tossed 5.0 innings, striking out 10 while allowing only three hits to pick up the win. Dobson (15-17) gave up seven runs on 10 hits and five walks in 6.0 innings.

JU takes on the loser of the Florida Atlantic/Stetson game at 4 p.m. in an elimination game at FAU Field in Boca Raton, Fla.
