May 14, 2005

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Senior leftfielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) earned 2005 Atlantic Sun Softball All-Tournament Team honors for her play in the Dolphins' first appearance in the A-Sun Championship, held at FAU Field.

Diaz went 4-for-8 with two RBI and two runs scored in JU's three games. The senior drove in the game-winning run while going 3-for-3 in the Dolphins' 4-2 win over Stetson Thursday afternoon.

"This is an honor for her to win this," said JU head coach Jeff Franquet. "She struggled all season, but she worked as hard as anyone on the team to try to break out of it, and she came up big for us in the tournament. I think this was a fitting end to a remarkable season by our team."

Diaz finished the year hitting .241 while ranking fifth in RBI with 27. She closes out her career with a .249 batting average to go with 14 doubles, 51 RBI and 51 runs scored.

JU saw their season end Friday evening in a 9-5 defeat to eventual A-Sun champions UCF. The Dolphins set new school records in overall and conference wins and closed out the season with a 35-32 record.
