Dec. 8, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - The Jacksonville softball team is in preparations for the 2006 season, but they have already earned a few honors before the first pitch. Eight Dolphin players were named on the National Fast pitch Coaches Association All-Academic team for the 2005 season.

Seniors Lindsay Freitag, Katie Pestrak and Kacey Yourous and sophomore Jillian Mirante earned their first all-academic honor. Junior transfer, Renee LaCroix, was also named to the academic team for her efforts at N.C. State last year.

Former Dolphins Lauren Redfern and Jamie Ross earned their second NFCA honors, while Mayte Diaz was named for the first time.

In four short years, the Dolphins have had 22 players earn NFCA all-academic honors.

"I am proud of the hard work that each of these players put in to attain such an award," said first-year JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "They have helped to establish a very high academic standard for our current and future players to live up to."

As a team, the Dolphins ranked 39th nationally with a team G.P.A of 3.169.

The Dolphins open the 2006 season with a doubleheader at home against Texas Tech on Thursday, Feb. 9. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
