JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - After nearly three weeks of practice, the Jacksonville University softball team will open the 2006 season at the JU Softball Complex on Thursday in a doubleheader against Texas Tech. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

"We are really looking forward to finally getting on the field this week," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "The team is excited to get things started and I'm excited to see us in real game action. We start off with three very good opponents, which will test us right away."

The Dolphins return 10 players from last season including senior pitcher Katie Dobson, senior shortstop Stephanie Farabee and sophomore pitcher Shannon Jensen. Jensen was voted 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference "Freshman of the Year" and she has already picked up preseason all-conference honors for this season. Last season, the Dolphins set a program-record 35 wins and reached the A-Sub Tournament for the first time.

After the doubleheader against Texas Tech, the Dolphins travel to Tampa, Fla. to compete in the USF Best Western Invitational. They open the tournament on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against host USF, who reached the NCAA Regionals a year ago. The Dolphins wrap up the tournament with Mississippi State and Western Kentucky.
