Softball downs Temple at the USF Wilson Invitational, 9-1

TAMPA, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team scored seven runs in the second inning and never looked back as they defeated Temple, 9-1, in five innings at the USF Wilson Invitational on Sunday night.

"I'm really happy with the way we swung the bats tonight," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "We jumped on them early offensively and we played great defensively. I was also pleased with the way our pitchers performed tonight."

The Dolphins (3-7) used six hits to score seven runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Lindsay Freitag hit a double to score two runners, while seniors Katie Pestrak and Stephanie Farabee each added an RBI in the inning. In the fifth inning, freshman Alexis Novak had a two-out single to plate two runners to give the Dolphins a 9-1 advantage.

The Owls (0-3) scored their lone run in the second inning off a RBI double from Courtney Norene.

Sophomore Shannon Jensen (2-4) earned the win after tossing 3-2/3 scoreless innings of relief and fanned three batters. Freshman Amber Janowski allowed one run on two hits in 1-1/3 innings to earn a no-decision.

Owls starter Jennifer Nacianceno (0-3) was tagged with the loss by surrendering seven runs--six earned--in 1-2/3 innings of work.

The Dolphins return to action on Monday in the final day of the USF Wilson Invitational. They open the day against Hofstra at 1:30 p.m. and finish the day against host USF at 4 p.m.
