JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - The Jacksonville University softball team fought off a late rally to defeat the Florida State Seminoles, 2-1, in the second game of a doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex on Wednesday night.

The Seminoles (8-3) took an 8-1 victory in game one, while the Dolphins (4-10) have now split the last three doubleheaders with Florida State dating back to the 2004 season.

"That was a big win for us," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "I believe the score of the first game was not indicative in how we played. I was really pleased with the way our girls responded in the second game because we could have easily folded after the first game."

Florida State's BillieAnne Gay plated a runner on a two-out double in the seventh inning to cut the Dolphins lead to 2-1. Senior Katie Dobson induced a foul fly out to end the Seminoles late rally and secure the victory.

The Dolphins grabbed the initial lead in the third inning off a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Farabee to plate Jillian Mirante.

In the fifth inning, the Seminoles had runners on second and third with one out looking to take the lead when LaShaun Davis popped the ball into fall territory. Junior Valerie Alter made the catch near the Dolphins bullpen and fired the ball home to nail the advancing runner on third at the plate to quash the Seminoles rally.

Mirante drove a two-out single deep to the right side to score Janine Palumbo and give the Dolphins a 2-0 advantage in the sixth inning.

Dobson (2-3) earned the victory by pitching a compete game and allowing seven hits, while fanning two batters.

Seminoles starter Melissa May (2-2) took the loss after surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits and striking out three batters in six innings.

In game one, the Seminoles took an early lead in the first inning off a solo home run by Veronica Wootson off JU starter and eventual losing pitcher Shannon Jensen.

After the home run, Jensen (2-6) retired the next 12 of 14 batters, but the Seminoles broke the game open in the sixth inning, by scoring five runs on six hits to extend their lead to 6-0.

Junior Renee LaCroix hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot, to break up the shut out by Seminole starter Tiffany McDonald in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wootson added a two-run home run in the seventh inning off reliever Amber Janowki to give the Seminoles an 8-1 lead.
