March 3, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - Due to a team dropping out of this weekend's JU triangle tournament, the Jacksonville Softball team will host a doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex against Savannah State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
"Hopefully the week of practice will help us remain mentally tough and focused for the games we play this weekend," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "This weekend is also a good test to help us prepare for the tough part of our schedule coming up real soon."
Last week, the Dolphins (6-12) picked up victories against Florida State and IPFW. The Dolphins downed the Seminoles, 2-1, in the second game of a doubleheader at home on Feb. 22. Sophomore Jillian Mirante had a run scored and an RBI to lead the Dolphins hitters, while Katie Dobson pitched a complete game to seal the victory.
The Dolphins downed IPFW twice, 8-0 & 6-0, on the final day of the JU/Best Western Tournament. Senior Lindsay Freitag recorded a home run and five RBI in the two games. Sophomore Shannon Jensen and Dobson limited the Mastodons hitters to eight hits in two complete-game shutouts.
Currently, seniors Janine Palumbo, Katie Pestrak and Kacey Yourous each lead the Dolphins offensively with 13 hits. Ashley Houston is tops on the team in batting average with .323, while senior Stephanie Farabee ranks first in RBI (10).
Jensen and Dobson each lead the team with three wins in the circle, while Jensen has a team-high 44 strikeouts.
