Softball splits doubleheader with Elon
March 21, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Shannon Jensen pitched a complete-game shutout, while senior Lindsey Freitag had a two-run single to help the Jacksonville University softball team defeat Elon, 3-0, in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at the JU Softball Complex.
The Dolphins (16-21) fell hard in the nightcap of the twin bill, 11-0.
"I am really happy with the way our team played in the first game," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "We played defense well and got some timely hits on offense, which put us in position to win late in the game. Unfortunately, we did the polar opposite in game two, but I believe we will not the same mistakes against Florida on Wednesday."
In game one, the Dolphins broke a scoreless tie in the second inning on a delayed steal which allowed Alexis Novak to swipe home for the 1-0 lead.
Jensen (7-11) earned the win by pitching her third shutout of the season and recording six strikeouts, while allowing one hit.
Phoenix starter Sammi Schroeder (4-3) took the loss by allowing three runs on eight hits and four strikeouts in six innings.
In game two, the Phoenix (12-7) scored five runs in the fourth and seventh innings to secure an 11-0 victory.
Dahlan had four hits, while Debbie Zeigler added five RBI to help the Phoenix.
Carole Lilley (3-4) earned the win in the circle, allowing no runs on six hits and fanning four batters in seven innings.
JU starter Katie Dobson (7-9) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Jensen and freshman Amber Janowski combined to log 3.2 innings of relief for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins return to action on Wednesday in a doubleheader against Florida in Gainesville, Fla. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
