March 22, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Florida scored four runs with two-outs in the second inning to help down the Jacksonville University softball team, 5-0, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Florida Softball Field in Gainesville, Fla.

"We didn't play as well as we could have today," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "Our defense made a mistake in the second inning, which the Gators used to their advantage. I told the team to learn from this loss and we have to start focusing on the conference schedule beginning on Friday."

The Gators (24-10) gained the initial lead in the second inning by scoring four runs on three consecutive two-out singles.

Gators second baseman Stacie Pestrak, twin sister of JU senior Katie Pestrak, reached first base on bunt single with one-out in the fourth inning. Kim Waleszonia plated Pestrak on the next at-bat on a single to extend the Gators lead to 5-0.

Janine Palumbo, Renee LaCroix and Kacey Yourous each had a hit, but four Gator pitchers held the Dolphins (16-22) scoreless to secure the win.

Gator reliever Stacey Stevens (10-2) pitched three scoreless innings and recorded four strikeouts to earn the win.

JU starter Shannon Jensen (7-12) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs, one earned, on 10 hits and four strikeouts in six innings.

The Dolphins open their Atlantic Sun Conference schedule on Friday at home in a doubleheader against Kennesaw State starting at 4 p.m.
