Softball's clutch hits help earn doubleheader sweep over Belmont, 4-1 & 4-2
April 7, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior left fielder Lindsey Freitag had a two-out two-run home run in the first game and a two-out RBI single in the second game to help the Jacksonville University softball team defeat Belmont, 4-1 & 4-2, in an Atlantic Sun doubleheader on Friday night at the JU softball complex.
Freitag finished the day with only two hits and three RBI to help the Dolphins (20-26, 4-4 A-Sun) secure the victories. Senior Katie Dobson (8-11) earned the victory in the first game by tossing a complete game and allowing one run on seven strikeouts. JU reliever Katie Buell (1-0) earned the win in game two after hurling 6.2 innings and allowing one run on seven hits in her first action in over a month.
"I was very pleased with our team's energy and enthusiasm in the games today," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "We had several timely hits that have been lacking over the last few games. We need to keep this momentum rolling into Sunday because this is a big weekend for us."
In game one, the Bruins (13-20-1, 1-7 A-Sun) grabbed the initial 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single by starting pitcher Chelsea Goodwin in third inning.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Freitag smashed her third home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Dolphins a 3-1 advantage.
Palumbo added her second double of the day in the fifth inning. Freshman Beth Glasscock followed with another double off Goodwin to extend the Dolphins lead to 4-1.
The Bruins threatened with base loaded in the seventh inning, but Dobson induced a fly out by Heather Grossnickle to quash the late rally.
Goodwin (5-5) took the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
Yourous, Palumbo and junior Renee LaCroix each finished with two hits to lead the offense in game one.
In the first inning of game two, Erin Mullen hit a one-out RBI double off JU starter Amber Janowski to get the early 1-0 advantage.
Janowski was relieved in the same inning by Buell, who was able to get the first batter she faced to fly out to left field and Freitag would then gun down the runner advancing from third to end the Bruins scoring threat.
The Dolphins tied the game in the bottom of the first inning from a two-out double by Glasscock.
Jess McMillian put the Bruins ahead, 2-1, in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single to left field, but the Dolphins tied the game again in the fifth inning from a two-out infield single by Palumbo.
Senior Ashley Houston reached on one-out single through the left side in the sixth inning. After a sacrifice fly by Alexis Novak, Freitag delivered a RBI double to right center field to give the Dolphins a 3-2 advantage. Freitag would later score on an infield single by Jillian Mirante to cap off the Dolphins scoring.
Buell pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win and the doubleheader sweep for the Dolphins.
Bruins starter Jennifer Batte (1-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits in six innings.
The Dolphins play again at home on Sunday in a doubleheader against Lipscomb starting at noon.
