ORLANDO, Fla. - UCF scored three runs in the third inning and used solid pitching to down the Jacksonville University softball team, 3-2, in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando, Fla.

"We played well today after the two hard losses from last night," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "I liked how we hit the ball in the game. The defense wasn't on the same page today, but we are really close to having everything put together for the final stretch run in the Atlantic Sun schedule."

The Golden Knights (17-31) trailed 1-0 in the third inning when Kacie Feaster scored on an error by senior Kacey Yourous to tie the game. Two batters later, Michelle Newton scored on pass ball. Lindsey Dean capped off the inning with a two-out RBI single to give the Golden Knights a 3-1 advantage.

Senior Janine Palumbo scored on a sacrifice fly from Katie Pestrak to allow the Dolphins (22-33, 6- 10 A-Sun) to make it a one run ballgame at 3-2 in the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, junior Valerie Alter was on second base with a chance to tie the game for the Dolphins, but UCF starter Magon Paul retired the next two batters to quash the late rally and secure the victory.

Paul (2-6) earned the win by allowing two runs on seven hits and recorded three strikeouts in seven innings.

Dolphins reliever Shannon Jensen (8-16) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits in three innings of work. Junior Katie Buell tossed two shut out innings to start the game and earned a no-decision. Freshman Amber Janowski pitched a scoreless sixth inning to finish the game.

Palumbo hit a run-scoring double in the first inning to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. She finished the game with two hits to lead all the Dolphins hitters.

The Dolphins wrap up their home schedule at the JU Softball Complex on Sunday in an A-Sun doubleheader against Florida Atlantic starting a 6 p.m.
