May 5, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team will play the two most important games of the season in their final Atlantic Sun doubleheader of 2006 on Saturday at Stetson.

The Dolphins (22-35, 6-12 A-Sun) must sweep the Hatters (39-13, 14-4 A-Sun) in order to earn a trip to their second consecutive A-Sun Conference Tournament. The Dolphins are currently battling East Tennessee State and Gardner-Webb for the final two spots in the postseason tournament in Boca Raton, Fla.

If the Dolphins split the doubleheader, they will lose a tiebreaker with the other two teams and be shut out of the conference tournament.

"Our kids know that in order to achieve our goal of winning the A-Sun that we must complete every pitch and every play," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "We had a great week of practice and our players are ready for the games. From here on out, we must play every game like it is single elimination."

Senior Janine Palumbo continues to have one of the best seasons of her career to lead the Dolphins' offense. Palumbo is batting a career-best .326 with 46 hits, 10 doubles and 20 RBI. Sophomore Jillian Mirante ranks second on the team with 44 hits, while batting over .300 for the second year in a row at .306.

In the circle, Katie Dobson leads the Dolphins with nine wins. Sophomore Shannon Jensen ranks first on the team with 107 strikeouts and Katie Buell has posted a team-low 2.28 ERA.

First pitch of the doubleheader for the Dolphins and Hatters will be at 7 p.m. The game can also heard online on
