BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team couldn't get the ball to bounce their way on Saturday morning as they lost to James Madison, 2-1, and Bethune-Cookman, 10-9, on the second day of the Florida Atlantic Pepsi Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

JU (2-12) pounded out 18 hits in two games, but committed five errors on defense, including three in the Bethune-Cookman (5-7) loss. James Madison (4-4) used a first-inning double to earn the win in the first game.

"We have got to play better defensively," said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. "Our team hit well today, but our defense cost us the games. We will look to bounce back on Sunday."

The Dolphins were led offensively by junior Sara Gordon went 6-for-9 with a double and three RBI in two games. Senior Jillian Mirante finished with three hits and two RBI on the day, while Shannon Jensen drove in three runs against the Wildcats.

Trailing 2-0 against the Wildcats, Kelly McKeon opened the second inning with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt by Simone Bruemmer and a walk to Amber Moseley, Mirante drove home McKeon on a single up the middle. Gordon cleared the bases with two-run double to give the Dolphins a 3-2 advantage.

In the third inning, Andrea Thomas scored a run on a sacrifice fly, while Trashonda Cove followed with a RBI single to give the Wildcats 4-3 lead.

JU evened the game at four apiece in the fifth inning when Jensen scored Gordon on a bases loaded fielder's choice to centerfield.

A JU error in the top of the sixth inning opened the door for 6-4 Wildcat advantage on a two-run double from Brandi Holley.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Dolphins would keep fighting as they scored four runs with two outs to take an 8-6 lead.

Mirante picked up a double down the right field line to start the rally. Gordon followed with single up the middle to score Mirante. Gordon would score in the next at bat on Renee LaCroix's triple to left field. After a walk to Ashley Mora, Jensen capped off the inning with a two-run double to left center field.

The Wildcats would also add four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Lanaya Jenkins finished their rally with a two-run pinch hit single off JU reliever and eventual losing pitcher Ashley Iveson to take a 10-8 advantage.

McKeon scored in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Jenkins would work out of the jam to quash the comeback and earn her second save of the Dolphins this week.

Brittney Dyson drove home two runs on a two-out double in the bottom of the first inning off Jensen to give the Dukes all output they needed for the 2-1 victory.

Branden Moss (2-0) stranded six JU runners over the next six innings to earn the win in the circle. She allowed eight hits and one run with five strikeouts in seven innings.
