Softball downs Western Michigan in final at-bat, 2-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Freshman Ashley Mora had a two-out two-run game-winning single to help the JU softball team down Western Michigan, 2-1, in the first day of the USF/adidas Spring Invitational on Thursday afternoon at the EC Moore Sports Complex.

The Dolphins (5-18) dropped their first game of the day to Oklahoma State (13-12), 9-2.

Mora beat out an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Broncos (3-4) to give the Dolphins earn the win.. Mora and Jillian Mirante each finished with three hits on the day, while Shannon Jensen had a pair of hits on Thursday and an RBI in game one.

Freshman Ashley Iveson (2-4) picked up the win for JU against Western Michigan by tossing her second complete game of year and allowing one unearned run on one hit, while fanning four batters.

"We rebounded nicely after the morning loss," said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. "We attacked the entire second game and were able to pull through with the win in the seventh inning. We are looking forward to taking this momentum into Friday."

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning of game two, Kelly McKeon reached first on an error by the shortstop. Senior Valerie Alter followed with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt by Pat Melo and a lineout by Jillian Mirante, Mora beat out an infield single to the right side fielded by a diving Sarah Thomas at second base, which allowed both Alter and Melo to score.

The Broncos lead initially in the fourth inning off a RBI single by Amanda Heckaman.

After the run-scoring single, Iverson retired the final 10 of 12 batters to help secure the win for the Dolphins.

Meg Thomas (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Broncos giving up two runs on nine hits in seven innings.

Against the Cowgirls, the Dolphins gained a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a base-loaded groundout from Jensen.

The Cowgirls bounced back in the bottom of the inning to score seven runs on three hits and three JU errors. Katelyn Bright, Krystle Sanchez and Sadie Krywicki each had RBI's in the first inning.

In the third inning, Krywicki and Jenna Harmison each added run-scoring doubles to extend the Cowgirls' advantage to 9-1.

Jensen opened the fifth inning with a double to center field and would later score on a fielding error, but Cowgirl reliever Chelsey Barclay hurled two scoreless innings to quash the Dolphins' late rally.

Barclary (1-4) fanned seven batters and surrendered one unearned run on six hits in 5.2 innings to earn her first win of the season. Jessica Hoppock allowed one run and had five walks in 1.1 innings to earn a no-decision.

Jensen (1-8) took the loss after allowing seven runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks in a 0.1 innings of work. Senior Katie Buell surrendered two runs on six hits in 5.2 relief innings.

The Dolphins continue the USF/adidas Spring Break Invitational on Friday as they face Wagner at 1 p.m. and North Carolina at 6 p.m.
