Softball teams with East Tennessee State for special cause at Friday's doubleheader

April 12, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team will assist the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers in its collective effort to raise support for the Bluffton University baseball team in Friday's Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex.

At the doubleheader, the Dolphins are helping the Lady Buccaneers accept donations for the Bluffton University baseball players and families, who lost five members of its team along with the bus driver and his wife in a traffic accident on I-75 in Atlanta, Ga., on March 2.

The Lady Buccaneers started raising support and money for the team after visiting the Bluffton players and families at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., just two days following the accident. The East Tennessee State players were so impacted by the people they met that day, they decided to play the season in remembrance of the people that lost their lives in the accident.

The Lady Buccaneers have also chosen to wear a purple "B" on their helmets in honor of those players and staff involved in the tragic event.

"We commend East Tennessee State for its efforts in raising support and money for this terrible tragedy," said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. "Our team is happy to help any way we can."

Fans can make donations at the press tent located behind the main stands at the JU Softball Complex. The East Tennessee State team asks if you write a check then to please make it payable to Bluffton University and place baseball team on the memo line. Donations of $5 or more will receive a bracelet.

First pitch for the doubleheader between the Dolphins and the Lady Buccaneers is slated for 5 p.m.
