Sarah Sigrest named A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week”
Freshman right-hander Sarah Sigrest strung up 12 scoreless relief innings for the JU softball team at the JU Invitational to earn Atlantic Sun “Pitcher of the Week” honors by the league office.
The Daphne, Ala. native went 2-0 after fanning 15 batters and allowing just three hits in four appearances. Sigrest is the fifth pitcher in program history to earn the honor and is the first since Katie Dobson in 2006 to get the weekly accolade.
“I am proud of Sarah,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “She had a great weekend and is getting stronger as we play more games. I’m excited to see how she will progress moving towards our conference schedule.”
Sigrest opened the invitational on Feb. 27 with two strikeouts in three hitless innings to help the Dolphins no-hit Coastal Carolina for a 3-0 win. In her next outing, she fanned 11 batters over five innings in JU’s 4-0 victory against Vermont. The next day, she retired 10-of-11 batters to get another win over the Catamounts before finishing the tourney with a scoreless innings against Marist on March 1.
Sigrest currently leads the team in strikeouts (53), ERA (2.50), innings pitched (58.0) and appearances (12). Her appearances and opposing batting average of .205 is good for fourth in the A-Sun rankings.
Sigrest and the Dolphins will look to continue their five-game winning streak on Tuesday when they head to face Georgia Southern for a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m.
