Softball announces inaugural alumni weekend for Sept. 18-19

The JU softball team is starting a new yearly tradition this fall as the Dolphins announce the inaugural alumni players weekend for Sept. 18-19 at the JU Softball Complex.

The Dolphins will welcome back former players with a barbeque at the field on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. The alumni will also get an opportunity to get back into the swings of things with a workout on the field following the conclusion of the current Dolphins practice that evening. On Sept. 19, the current Dolphins will square off against the former JU players in the first alumni game at 10 a.m.

“We are really looking forward to this weekend,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “Since our program is getting older, this was the best thing to start doing so we can make sure our former players can feel involved with the team. I know when I was a player, this something we always looked forward to doing. I want our former players to continue to be a large part of our program as we try to become one of the top teams in the conference.”

Former players can contact graduate assistant Jillian Mirante in the softball office at (904) 256-7361 for more information or download the information sheet on the softball page on

On the field in 2009, the Dolphins had one of their best seasons as they battled through several injuries to finish the year with the second-best record in school history and make the A-Sun Tournament for the first time since 2005. JU also produced two five-game winning streaks, which are both tied for the second longest stretches in the program’s existence.

Sophomore Katie Kelly led the Dolphins in hitting for the second straight season to be named first team all-conference, while freshman Sarah Sigrest had most of her pitching categories finish in the top four of the single-season lists en route to earning all-freshman honors. Kelly also became the first Dolphin in program history to earn Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region first team honors
