Good times were had by all to round out the inaugural alumni weekend for the JU softball program on Saturday at the JU Softball Complex.

The Dolphins treated their former players to a free barbeque on Friday night at the field to show them the new facility improvements and meet the current team. On Saturday, the current team battled the alumni to a 4-0 victory before both groups closed out the weekend at Chicago Pizza in Jacksonville Beach.

Former JU players Diana Korcak (2003-04), Kacey Yourous (2004-06), Stephanie Farabee (2005-06), Beth Glasscock (2006, 2008), Shannon Jensen (2005-08), Lindsey Freitag (2005-06), Alexis Novak (2006-09), Simone Bruemmer (2007-09), Shannon Monahan (2008-09), Renee LaCroix (2006-07), Jamie Ross (2004-05), Valerie Alter (2006-07), Pat Melo (2007-08) and current graduate assistant Jillian Mirante (2005-08) all came back to enjoy the festivities.

“This was a great weekend,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “This is something that we wanted to do for a long time and we are happy that we were able to get this going. I am so thankful for all those who showed up for the event. We want to make our program into a great family atmosphere for years to come and this was a great start.”

Freshman catcher Sarah Simon put JU ahead in the first inning with an RBI single, while junior infielders Katie Kelly and Annike Don broke the game open with consecutive run-scoring singles in the third inning. Senior outfielder Kelly McKeon scored in the fourth inning to round out JU’s offense.

Despite being on the losing end, Mirante show her pupils that she still had what it takes by finishing with a hit, a stolen base and an assist after throwing out senior catcher Ashley Mora at home plate from right field.

The Dolphins will continue its fall campaign on Saturday when they host Florida State College (formerly FCCJ) for a doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
