Sophomore Kayla Shavers earns A-Sun “Player of the Week” honors
Sophomore Kayla Shavers is starting to make up for her lost time after leading the JU softball team to four wins in five contests last week to receive Atlantic Sun “Player of the Week” accolades.
Shavers, who missed the first eight games to recover from a leg injury, has raised her average from .286 to a team-best .395 clip after going 9-for-17 (.529) with eight RBI, three runs, two doubles and a game-winning inside-the-park home run.
“Kayla is playing well right now,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “She is seeing the ball and remaining calm in pressure situations. I am very proud of her and she is deserving of this week’s award.”
The Largo, Fla. native began the week going 5-for-8 with five RBI in two victories against Toledo on March 10. Shavers opened by finishing 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, including a walk-off double to end the contest in the sixth for a 12-4 victory. In game two against Toledo, she had a season-high three hits and three RBI, while ending the contest early again with a two-run double in the fifth.
Shavers started the FAU Parent’s Weekend Tournament with an RBI single against Syracuse before recording two hits and scoring a run in the win over Virginia Tech. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom sixth inning against Charleston Southern, she had a two-run inside-the-park home run to right field to help JU erase a three-run deficit for a 4-3 victory on March 11.
Shavers is the second Dolphin this season to earn the weekly honor after sophomore Amanda Schmidt received the weekly accolades on Feb. 15.
The Dolphins and Shavers play host to Florida A&M on Wednesday in doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
