Softballs swept in twin bill by Lipscomb
Nothing is easy for the JU softball team right now as the Dolphins drop an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader to Lipscomb, 4-0 & 7-0, on Friday night at the JU Softball Complex.

Christen Campbell hit two home runs for the Lady Bisons (27-7, 6-0) on the night and pitched five scoreless innings in game two to help give the Dolphins (22-14, 1-5) their seventh loss in the last eight games.

“We just can’t do anything right at the moment,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “Lipscomb proved why they are the top team in this conference. We played a little more relaxed tonight, but it wasn’t enough. Our goal is to keep battling because we believe we can break out of this soon.”

Whitney Kiihnl (18-2) allowed a hit and fanned seven batters in seven scoreless innings for the win in game one. Campbell (7-2) got the game two win after pitching five shutout frames on two hits and four strikeouts. She also added a three-run homer to help her cause.

Senior Ashley Iveson was tagged with the game one loss for JU, allowing four runs on 10 hits, three walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Sophomore Sarah Sigrest (6-5) took the second loss by surrendering six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 3.2 innings, while freshman Olivia Kline finished with an unearned run on three hits in 3.1 innings.

In game one, Campbell led off the second inning with a linen-drive home run to left field to give Lipscomb a 1-0 advantage.

Kiihnl held the Dolphins hitless through the first four frames before giving up a two-out double to senior Kelly McKeon in the fifth inning. Sophomore Melissa Morales lined a shot by to Kiihnel that she secured for the third out of the inning.

The Lady Bisons extended their lead to 3-0 from two-out RBI singles from Mollie Mitchell and Abby Keese in the fifth and sixth innings.

Courtney Billington homered to start the seventh inning and Kiihnl retired the final 10 JU batters in order to lock up the Lipscomb victory.

In game two, Campbell delivered another early blow for the Lady Bisons with a three-run homer in the third inning for the 3-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the third inning, Morales opened with a walk before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Annike Don. After a ground out by junior Katie Kelly, Morales advanced to third on a hit by sophomore Kayla Ouellet, who also moved to second on the play. Freshman Sarah Simon delivered a hard shot back up the middle that Campbell leaped to snag from the circle to the out at first to end the inning.

Billington tripled home two runs in the fourth inning before scoring on an error during the next at-bat to give Lipscomb a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Bisons added one more run with the help of an error in the fifth inning, while Alania Jacobson pitched two scoreless relief innings to close out the sweep.

The Dolphins will look to bounce back on April 6 when they travel across the city to face UNF for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. The games will also count towards the annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings between the rival schools.
