Softball faces in-state rival UCF on Tuesday
JU softball team will try and end the regular season schedule on a high note as the Dolphins start the week against in-state rival UCF for a single game on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Dolphins (32-18, 10-8 A-Sun) will look to lock up a berth in the A-Sun Tournament two days later when they play Stetson on Thursday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

“This is another big week for us,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “We did a great job on the road last week and we need to carry it over. As long as we keep our momentum up then we can secure a berth for the conference tournament.”

JU put itself in great shape for a spot in the conference tournament after winning three out of four games on the road last week.

The Dolphins got a pair of 2-0 wins over Kennesaw State on April 29 with the help of complete-game shutouts by senior Ashley Iveson and freshman Olivia Kline. Iveson secured her 16th win and fanned 11 batters for her sixth double-digit strikeout effort to set new single seasons records in each category.

Senior Amber Moseley also helped the cause by getting the Dolphins an insurance run with RBI hits in each win.

Two days later, freshman Sarah Simon went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a home run, while Kline pitched five scoreless innings to lead JU to a 5-0 victory in game two over Mercer to split the twin bill.

The Knights (29-20) have won the last four of five games, including taking their series against Tulsa at home over the weekend. Last season, Abby McClain had a run-scoring double to help UCF down JU, 5-3, in eight innings at the JU Softball Complex. The Knights own a 10-1 advantage against the Dolphins with JU’s lone win coming in 2007.

The Hatters (30-19, 12-8) enter the week winning their last six contests to rise to second in the A-Sun standings. Stetson swept Mercer and Kennesaw State at home before taking last week off for finals. The Hatters won both contests against the Dolphins in 2009 to take a 14-3 lead in the all-time series.
