Softball falls to UCF, 3-0
Hillary Barrow had two RBI hits and made several key plays at third base to lead UCF past the JU softball team, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon in Orlando.

The Knights (30-20) added two of their three runs with two outs, while the Dolphins (32-19) stranded seven runners in the final four innings - including three in scoring position to take the loss.

“I hoped for a better result today,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “We came out flat and they took advantage of our mistakes. I liked how we fought in the end so we have to build on that for Thursday’s games at Stetson.”

UCF starter Ashleigh Cole (19-12) earned the win in the circle after scattering four hits and fanning eight to get the complete-game shutout.

Senior Ashley Iveson (16-8) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. Freshman Olivia Kline gave up her first run in more than 28 innings of relief in the seventh, while sophomore Sarah Sigrest had two scoreless frames and struck out two batters to start the contest.

Along with Barrow, Natalie Land finished with two hits and Morgan Bullard recorded an RBI single to help the cause. Freshman Sarah Simon had a double to lead four different Dolphins with hits in the game.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Knights got consecutive two-out singles from Tiffany Lane and Land. Iveson ran the count full to Barrow in the next at-bat, but she fouled several pitches off before connecting on a single through the left side to score Lane for the 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Melissa Morales led off the JU fifth inning with a single to right field and moved to second in the next at-bat on a wild pitch. Senior Kelly McKeon advanced Morales to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a strike out, sophomore Kayla Ouellet laced a shot down the third base line, but Barrow made a leaping stab to make the third out.

Barrow extended the Knights lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning after plating Land from first on a double to center field.

In the sixth inning, junior Katie Kelly opened with a single to left field, while Simon advanced her to third with a double to the same spot in the next at-bat. Cole retired the next two batters before Barrow threw out sophomore Amanda Schmidt on a groundout to third to end the inning.

Bullard added an insurance run with an RBI hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Cole tossed a scoreless seventh to secure the win.

The Dolphins close out the A-Sun schedule on Thursday with a doubleheader at Stetson in DeLand, Fla. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Fans can follow the contests through live video streaming or live stats by logging onto JUDolphins.com.
