Feb. 8, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team fell 5-2 to Minnesota and 2-0 to UNC Greensboro on the first day of the JU/Best Western Invitational.

Ashley Iveson (1-1) had her second consecutive big night for the Dolphins in the loss, as she recorded 10 strikeouts against UNC-Greensboro and finished the day giving up two runs in seven strong innings.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins it wasn't enough as the Spartans pitcher Amber Harrell put in a dazzling display of her own in the complete game shutout.

The Dolphins (1-2) had two runners on in the bottom of the seventh after sophomore third baseman Beth Glasscock and freshman catcher Jessica Abraham were walked, but were unable to get any runners across the plate.

In the first game against Minnesota, Golden Gophers pitcher Briana Hassett held the Dolphins at bay until the sixth inning, when senior outfielder Jillian Mirante scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Abraham.

Freshman second baseman Katie Kelly scored in the seventh off of a wild pitch.

The JU/Best Western Invitational resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. as Southern Illinois takes on Minnesota at the JU Softball Complex. The Dolphins will be in action again on Saturday as they faceoff against Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. and Southern Illinois at 7:15 p.m.
