JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team defeated Saint Joseph, 2-1, on Thursday to open the USF/Under Armour Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Sports Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Abbott (1-0), who missed most of last season due to injury, picked up her first career victory for the Dolphins (11-13) after giving up one run on two hits while recording four strikeouts in four innings.
Freshman outfielder Katarina Engler delivered a two RBI single in the second inning to account for all of the Dolphins' scoring. Sophomore third baseman Beth Glasscock led off the inning with a double before Hawks' pitcher Lauren Cognigni got two quick outs. Freshman outfielder Kayla Ouellet kept the inning alive with a single that moved Glasscock to third and promptly stole second base. Engler then drove Cognigni's offering through the right side of the infield giving the Dolphins' the 2-0 lead.
Cognigni (1-3) allowed two runs in seven innings while walking four and striking out five for the Hawks.
Abbott held the Hawk's hitless through three innings but found herself in trouble in the fourth. After giving up a run and loading the bases with one out, Abbott delivered back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.
Senior pitcher Shannon Jensen picked up her fourth save of the season as she worked an almost flawless final three innings for the Dolphins. The JU career saves leader, Jensen allowed only one hit while striking out two.
There was more success on the base path for the Dolphins, as they recorded five stolen bases in the game. Ouellet stole two, while Engler and seniors Jillian Mirante and Patricia Melo recorded one each. The Dolphins' game against North Carolina State was postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for Sunday.
On Friday, the Dolphins' will be back in action at 2:30 p.m. against Maine before taking on Penn State at 5 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
