Softball drops two to Kennesaw State
March 28, 2008
KENNESAW, Ga. - The JU softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader on Friday to Kennesaw State, 4-0,3-0, in Kennesaw Ga.
The Dolphins (15-26) dropped game one after Owls' senior pitcher Brittany Matthews held JU to two hits - singles by Mirante and Ouellet.
The Owls (25-9) scored twice in the bottom of the first off of a two-run home run by Cross and added a run in the second and the sixth to complete the victory.
Senior pitcher Shannon Jensen (7-10) gave up four runs in six innings, while striking out four to take the loss for the Dolphins.
In game two, the Dolphins had a chance to take the lead with a two-out rally in the top of the third. Senior designated player Patricia Melo reached base on the Dolphins first hit of the game and then advanced to third after two consecutive wild pitches. Senior outfielder Jillian Mirante then walked and stole second base, before freshman shortstop Katie Kelly flied out to deep right field.
The fourth inning was almost identical as the third for the Dolphins - falling just short on a two-out rally. Sophomore first baseman Kelly McKeon singled before taking third on an error that allowed sophomore second baseman Shannon Monahan to reach. Monahan then stole second before Owls' pitcher Jessica Cross got freshman outfielder Kayla Ouellet to pop up and end the threat.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Iveson (1-7) took the loss after giving up one run in six innings, while striking out two. Iveson gave up five hits after keeping the Owls hitless through the first four innings.
McKeon went 2-for-3 in game two, while Mirante stole three bases on the night.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on East Tennessee State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
