April 4, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team dropped two games on Friday night to USC Upstate (4-0, 9-0) at the JU Softball Complex.
The Dolphins struggled all night with the Spartans pitching and managed just four hits in each game.
In game one, freshman pitcher Morgan Childers (17-5) pitched her seventh shutout of the season after going seven innings and striking out eight. The Dolphins did manage to draw four walks off of Childers, including three in the first inning, but were unable to get a run across.
Freshman outfielder Katarina Engler went 2-for-3 in game one to lead the Dolphins, while sophomore first baseman Kelly McKeon and freshman shortstop Katie Kelly had the other two hits for the Dolphins in the game.
USC Upstate pushed all four of their runs across in the third inning to take the win.
Senior pitcher Shannon Jensen (8-11) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) in seven innings while striking out six.
Game two was more of the same for the Dolphins, as pitcher Brittany Rice (3-6) also pitched a shutout. Rice went six innings and allowed only four hits and one walk, while striking out one.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Iveson (2-8) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) in 2.2 innings while striking out one. Jensen pitched 2.1 more innings in relief, giving up four runs of her own, before sophomore Brittany Abbott pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday at 9 a.m. in a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb at the JU Softball Complex.
