Softball splits series with Gardner-Webb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team split their series with Gardner-Webb on Saturday, taking game one, 5-3 in eight innings before falling, 3-0, in game two at the JU Softball Complex.

Sophomore third baseman Beth Glasscock hit a two-run walk off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Dolphins the win in game one.

The Dolphins found themselves trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, but managed to pull a run back after freshman Katie Kelly recorded a sacrifice RBI following three consecutive singles by freshman left fielder Katarina Engler, senior designated player Patricia Melo and senior right fielder Jillian Mirante brought her to the plate with the bases loaded.

In the sixth inning, the Dolphins took the lead with an RBI single by Glasscock scored Ashley Mora to tie the game and an error by the Runnin' Bulldogs pitcher allowed sophomore second baseman Kelly McKeon to score after sophomore first baseman Amber Moseley put the ball in play.

Gardner-Webb (14-24) tied the game in the seventh, before Glasscock won it in the eighth.

Senior pitcher Shannon Jensen (9-11) went all eight innings for the Dolphins, giving up three runs (one earned) while striking out six.

Gardner-Webb pitchers Christine Murray and Taryn Beck combined to shutout the Dolphins in game two, limiting JU to just three hits, including two by Melo.

Freshman center fielder Kayla Ouellet had the Dolphins other hit in the 3-0 loss.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Iveson (2-9) took the loss, giving up three runs, while striking out four in five innings. Jensen added to her total by pitching two scoreless innings to end the game.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to cross-town rival North Florida for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla.
