The JU softball team had a career year on the field last season and did as much damage in the classroom as well after ranking 12th on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic list for the 2009-10 school year.

The Dolphins produced a program-best 3.475 GPA to earn their second-highest ranking in school history behind their 11th place spot (3.393) in 2006.

“This is a great honor,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “We had a great year on the field last season, but I’m equally proud of our work in the classroom. I want our kids to excel in all areas while they are here at JU and they did that in 2010.”

Along with the team ranking, the Dolphins also had a program-high 10 players receive NFCA all-academic team honors. Amanda Schmidt, Amber Moseley, Ashley Mora, Brie Carmack, Jackie Samuels, Katie Kelly, Melissa Morales, Morgan Kibler, Olivia Kline and Sarah Simon each earned the accolade for their work in the classroom.

In all, JU had 18 of its 19 players finish the academic year with a 3.0 GPA or better with seven players making the Dean’s List and three receiving President’s List accolades.

The Dolphins begin their eight-game fall schedule on Friday with a doubleheader at 5 p.m. against Seminole State College at the JU Softball Complex. They will host Flagler on Saturday at 1 p.m. before wrapping the schedule with Florida State College (Oct. 6) and Brevard State College (Oct. 8). JU ends the fall with its second annual alumni game on Oct. 9 at 10 a.m.
